Joe Celko has a now complete series of articles available at dbazine. These concern that old chestnut of where to put your business rules and data validation. My somewhat cynical view on this hasn't changed much since this discussion back in 2002. Joe makes the pros and cons of both common approaches clear in his usual style in the series as a whole, but especially this concluding article.
