New Term Old Issue 

During a discussion about a poorly designed in-house system that has been extended in an ad-hoc, undocumented and uncontrolled fashion (I know my readers have none of these things but bear with me), the designer claimed.

This behaviour is an emergent property of the system

Beats bug any day.

Trust me, he knows exactly what it means. Using it inappropriately is par for the course.
 
SSM is the new emergance.

Obviously he is a proponent of Soft Systems Methodology, who probably went to Uni in Lancaster under Checkland. I actually went to Uni on the Sunshine Coast, QLD, Australia, under a student of Checkland's, Dr Paul Leddington. He was a great guy, a real non-conformist, that is so long as you agreed with him.
 
Emergent property... I like it. I'll have to remember that one when I am demonstrating my Advanced Databases assignment at Uni next week!
